How long does Prozac stay in your system?
Prozac (fluoxetine) stays in your body for five to six weeks after the last capsule. Sexual side effects can outlast it. That is called PSSD.

Prozac (fluoxetine) stays in your body for five to six weeks after your last capsule, says the UK information for doctors. Sexual side effects can last longer than the drug. The UK leaflet warns they have sometimes carried on after stopping, and then it’s called post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD).
If you stopped a few weeks ago, some of it is still in you. If it’s been months, those figures say it has gone. There’s no reason to wait for it to wash out before you tell your GP what has changed.
PSSD isn’t only about sex, even though the name says so. The checklist doctors and researchers proposed in 2022 to recognise it has one sign every case needs: a lasting change in how the genitals feel, often numbness. It also lists emotional numbing, problems with concentration and memory, and changes in other senses.
The story in 3 lines
- Fluoxetine stays in the body for five to six weeks after the last capsule (UK information for doctors).
- The UK leaflet says sexual problems have in some cases “continued after stopping treatment”. Prozac’s US label has said they “occasionally persist” since 2011.
- No reliable figure exists for how often (2023 review). Patients call it PSSD.

Katie was 21 when she was prescribed Prozac, an SSRI antidepressant, and she took it for about three years. Her sexual and emotional problems didn’t stop when the capsules did. In this short clip she describes going back to her GP. Watch it if you’ve been told it must be something else.
At that point, she says, she still didn’t know the medicine was behind it. Her doctors pointed to low self-esteem, trauma and depression. She’d had low confidence and trauma before fluoxetine too, she says, but no problems with sex, attraction or feeling close to someone. “Before SSRIs, I experienced these very normally.”
What is Prozac’s half-life?
About four to six days, if you take it every day. That’s how long it takes for the amount in your blood to drop by half. After one half-life, half is left. After two, a quarter.
There’s a second clock. Your liver turns fluoxetine into norfluoxetine, another substance that also acts on the body. It can take up to 16 days to halve. Together, says the UK information for doctors, the two keep the drug in your body for five to six weeks. If you have liver disease, both take longer to halve.
You can see this in your own leaflet. The UK fluoxetine leaflet says not to take a certain older type of antidepressant, called an MAOI, for at least five weeks after you stop fluoxetine. After a long or high-dose course, it adds, your doctor may need to wait longer. That gap is there because fluoxetine is still in your body, and the two could clash.
Is Prozac still in your brain after you stop?
For the first few days, mostly yes. Then it seems to leave your brain about as fast as it leaves your blood.
Fluoxetine contains fluorine, which a special MRI scan can pick up in a living brain.
In a small US study, people on daily fluoxetine switched to dummy pills for three days. On average, nearly 9 in 10 of the signal from fluoxetine, and what the body makes from it, was still showing up in their brains. With paroxetine, another SSRI, it was about 4 in 10.
For what happens after that, a French team scanned just two people after they stopped. Overall, the drug faded from brain and blood at about the same pace. A scan shows whether the drug is there. It can’t show why symptoms might stay once it has gone.
Why do side effects last after Prozac is out of your system?
The cause isn’t known yet, a 2022 review says. But the UK leaflet does warn about it. Medicines like fluoxetine may cause sexual problems, it says, and adds: “In some cases, these symptoms have continued after stopping treatment.” It gives no end date. Our article on Prozac’s sexual side effects covers how common they are.
The 2022 checklist says ordinary sexual side effects can linger for days or weeks after the last dose. Once problems have lasted three months, it says, PSSD is more likely. That’s more than twice as long as even fluoxetine takes to leave your body.
Two clocks after your last fluoxetine capsule
For some people it has lasted years after stopping. Nobody knows yet who will be affected, or whether it will ease.
What can I do?
These medicines help many people. If you have side effects, that’s a decision for you and your prescriber. Don’t stop suddenly. Fluoxetine’s slow exit doesn’t change that: the leaflet says not to stop without asking your doctor, and lists withdrawal effects such as dizziness and pins and needles. Our page on withdrawal or PSSD explains the difference.
With fluoxetine the weeks since your last capsule matter, so write your dates down for your GP: “Fluoxetine 20 mg from May 2024, last capsule 2 February 2026. May 2026: genitals still numb, and I feel emotionally flat.”
What to say to your GP
You could open with: “My last fluoxetine capsule was [number] months ago. The leaflet says sexual problems can continue after stopping, and mine have.”
- Could this still be fluoxetine in my system, this long after?
- What else should we rule out?
- Can you note my dates and symptoms, including the ones that aren't sexual?
- Will you report it to the Yellow Card scheme, or shall I?
Many people say it took time to be taken seriously. Bring the leaflet line. You can report it without a doctor agreeing.
Report it: it helps everyone
A doctor’s note helps you. A report to the medicines regulator helps everyone else: it is how patterns get noticed.
- No proof needed. A suspicion is enough, even years after stopping.
- Where: the Yellow Card scheme in the UK, MedWatch in the US.
- Use the right words. If symptoms continued after stopping, write Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (MedDRA 10086208).
Our reporting guide walks you through it
What else do people ask?
How long does one Prozac capsule stay in your system? Not as long as after months of daily use. Prozac’s US label gives fluoxetine a shorter half-life after a single dose, but norfluoxetine still halves just as slowly. Lasting problems have been reported after short courses too: see PSSD after a few pills.
Is it the same for other antidepressants? Not for sertraline. Its half-life is about a day, so it clears much faster. Many UK antidepressant leaflets carry the same warning about sexual problems continuing after stopping: see which antidepressants are linked to PSSD.
When was this first reported? In 1991, for fluoxetine. That’s when the UK medicines regulator had its first reports of sexual problems that continued after someone stopped it, says the 2022 checklist paper.
Katie has lived with this for about 14 years, and only linked it to fluoxetine last year. If you’re counting weeks rather than years, you don’t have to wait for anything to clear before you report it. Our page on post-SSRI sexual dysfunction explains what is known.

Fluoxetine: what the official texts say, country by country
For the SSRI antidepressant fluoxetine (Prozac), the product information we read in the United Kingdom, that of a generic product, says there have been reports of long-lasting sexual dysfunction where symptoms continued after SSRIs were stopped. This is known as post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD). The EU medicines regulator set the wording of this warning in 2019 for ten medicines, fluoxetine among them, and a government answer in Parliament says UK product information for all SSRIs was updated in 2019 to carry it. In the United States, the Prozac text for professionals says that symptoms of sexual dysfunction occasionally persist after fluoxetine is stopped. That sentence stands in the section on adverse reactions, not in a warning, and not every fluoxetine label there has it.
This is a record of what each text says and of the date it prints. A text is quoted in its own words, or summarised where the row says so. It is not a comparison of countries. All medicines and countries
