Study Reveals Persistent Penile Vascular Abnormalities and Severe Side Effects in Men After Discontinuing 5ARIs for Hair Loss
This study, conducted by researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions, investigates the persistent side effects experienced by men who discontinued the use of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) for androgenic alopecia (AGA). The study involved 25 men with a history of 5ARI use and 28 controls. Using various self-reported questionnaires and Penile Duplex Doppler Ultrasound (PDDU) assessments, the study found significant differences in the sexual and psychological health of those who had used 5ARIs compared to the control group. Notably, 68% of the 5ARI users exhibited penile vascular abnormalities, and they scored higher on measures of depression and sexual dysfunction. Alarmingly, two participants in the 5ARI group committed suicide during or after the study. The findings suggest that the adverse effects of 5ARIs extend beyond sexual dysfunction, potentially causing long-lasting genitourinary, physical, and psychological harm even after discontinuation of the drug. The study underscores the importance of carefully considering the risks before using 5ARIs for AGA treatment.
